God loves you. Like He really, actually loves you.
I think most of us get that with our heads. We all have John 3:16 memorized, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” We can talk about His unconditional love, that God loves us so much that He was willing to sacrifice His own Son to be with us forever. We get it. God loves us, unconditonally. He loved us knowing every sin we would ever commit, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). That is an incredible kind of love. And we know it intellectually.
But I think for some of us, me included, we know that God loves us with our heads but sometimes not with our hearts. We know, factually, that God loves us. He told us. He has shown us. But I’m not sure, in the depths of our hearts, that we truly believe that God loves us.
I know God loves me, but my mom died of cancer last year. I know God loves me, but He won’t take this sin I struggle with away from me. I know God loves me, but we had a miscarriage. I know God loves me, but I lost my job and can’t provide for my family. I know God loves me, but I just got divorced. I know God loves me, but He didn’t heal my child. And we could just go on and on…
It is so easy in these moments, and honestly just through life in general, to know that God loves us, but not truly believe that He does. But God really does love you. God is for you. He’s never against you. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). In every circumstance God is doing what is best for you, because He loves you. Even though He isn’t taking that pain away, even though He didn’t heal your family member, even though you are struggling financially, God is working for your good; He is doing what is best for you. Sometimes God doesn’t give us what we want, but He always gives us what we need.
Because God loves you. He really does love you. GOD. LOVES. YOU. One more time: God loves you. He loves you to the core. He loves you more than you could ever understand. There is nothing that you could ever do to make Him stop loving you. He loves you like crazy. He loves you relentlessly. He loves you extravagantly. He loves you unconditionally. He loves you more than you will ever know. He loves you so much He died for you. He loves you so much He always does what is best for you. He loves you like a father loves his children. He spoils you like dads do. He loves you like there is no one else on earth. He just plain loves you. He wants to be your friend. He knows you better than anyone else. He created you. He loves your laugh. He loves it when you smile. He loves to see you succeed, and He loves you when you don’t. He loves everything about you. He is closer to you than you could ever imagine. He loves you when you’re hurting. He loves you when you’re alone. He loves you while you’re sinning. He loves you when you fight with Him. He loves you when you’re angry with Him. He loves you when you run away from Him. He loves you when you’re the prodigal son, and He runs to meet you when you come home. Because His love is like an ocean; you can see it’s beginning but not it’s end. His love never fails. His love never stops. His love never quits. His love never ends.
So whatever season you are in right now, I just want you to know, in the depths of your soul, that God loves you. He really, truly loves you.
But honestly, all of these things I listed are just more facts; more things for us to know with our heads. I think that the way we come to know in our hearts that God loves us, to truly believe that He loves us, is to know Him. If we want to actually believe that God loves us, then we have to know Him intimately. So we have to be in His word. We have to talk with Him. We have to study about Him. The closer we become to God, the more we will truly know that He loves us.
A.W. Tozer wrote, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” If that is a true statement, then we better know who God is! We better know about Him, who He is and what He does. We better know Him personally. We better know Him intimately. And we certainly better know that He loves us.
So get to know Him, read the Bible, talk to Him – daily, just live life with Him, because He loves you.
This is my prayer for you: “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:14-19).
Today, may you just know, in the depths of your heart – in your soul, that God loves you.
